The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position will be part of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Lab Support Services. The DPAA is the US Department of Defense Agency responsible for the recovery and identification of fallen US service members from WWII to the gulf war. Its mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting of missing personnel to their families and the nation. To accomplish this, the DPAA executes recovery missions worldwide, and recovered material is analyzed in the state-of-the-art DPAA laboratory.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist to provide professional and scientific assistance. 

Responsibilities

  • Provides professional forensic and archaeological laboratory analysis and designs and implements analyses of a variety of materials associated with covered conflicts, including the Cold War, Vietnam War, Korean Conflict and World War II.
  • Apply expertise in fundamental spatial concepts for assessing, visualizing, and managing data using software, such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Surfer and GoogleEarthPro.
  • Serves as a scientific-decision maker to create and iteratively execute archaeological strategy to excavate a site and forensically process any evidence.
  • Deploys up to 140 days a year to recovery sites (both foreign and domestic) which may include remote, isolated, and/or austere environments.
  • Follow all DPAA policies and procedures to serve as a scientific-decision maker to create and iteratively execute an archaeological strategy to excavate a site and forensically process any evidence.
  • Perform to DPAA Laboratory standards the direction and supervision of a team of military and civilian personnel in the execution of an established archaeological strategy.
  • Comply with all DPAA requirements for reporting and coordinating all plans and results through all appropriate channels.
  • Apply knowledge of human remains identification procedures, and comprehensive knowledge of remote-sensing, mapping, probing, coring, and test excavation methods/techniques to recover and stabilize human skeletal and
  • dental remains and material evidence from archaeological and other contexts in the field and laboratory.
  • Write, implement, and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Assists lab personnel by answering questions, troubleshooting issues, and providing feedback regarding LIMS as required by the LIMS Project Leads.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess a Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field.
  • Leadership background required with at least one year of full-time professional experience at the supervisory level in the study of underwater archaeological resources
  • Demonstrated Phase II underwater experience conducting geophysical off-shore surveys.
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in general archaeological research, administration or management.
  • At least four months of supervisory field and analytic experience in general archaeology.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of best practices in forensic and archaeological laboratory analysis procedures.
  • Demonstrated general Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III experience in the processing of underwater sites and resources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of artifact and material evidence analysis to include identifying circumstantial and direct evidence supporting casualty identifications.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of forensic laboratory best practices and accreditation standards.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree required; PhD preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience
