ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND/CULTURE

The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation is a private non-profit organization driving economic development in Detroit. The DEGC works closely with the City of Detroit and other partners to support existing businesses and bring new companies and investments to the city. DEGC provides staff services to Detroit’s public development authorities, including The Downtown Development Authority, The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, The Economic Development Corporation, The Eight Mile Woodward Corridor Improvement Authority, the Neighborhood Development Corporation, the Local Development Finance Authority, and the Tax Increment Finance Authority.

SUMMARY OF ROLE

The individual holding this position will provide technical support to the DEGC Business Development team by executing specific business development strategies, prospect recruitment, or retention assistance as directed by the Business Development Manager(s), the Business Development Director (s), or the Vice President. This individual will also serve as a team leader for special business development projects as assigned. This person will help to solidify and implement standard operating procedures and data management for the department.

The person in this role must be able to collaborate, build consensus, and manage relationships with strategic partners, including the Mayor’s administration, the City Council, other local, regional, and state economic development organizations, investors, businesses, and nonprofit/foundation communities. Critical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving, and flexibility are crucial attributes of this position.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receives and tracks development leads from the DEGC website and other portals and disseminates to appropriate personnel for follow-up.
  • Provides various research and technical assistance needed for DEGC’s business attraction and retention programs.
  • Identify, vet, and foster attraction and expansion leads.
  • Manage and coordinate business attraction RFP/RFI responses.
  • Maintain a database of responses and response resources. Conducts site searches for prospects.
  • Prepare detailed packages that include information on available properties, location advantages, demographics, wage rates, financing, and incentives.
  • Works closely with the Marketing and Communications team to promote Business Development wins and serve as department liaison with comms.
  • Assists in developing assorted marketing materials and serves as the project lead to ensure progress and completion.
  • Prepares specialized reports for management information.
  • Assists with the preparation and presentation of proposals to prospects and stakeholders.
  • Provides staff support at local trade shows.
  • Provide other support needed to ensure the success of business development programs, such as coordinating events, assisting in communications and outreach, data entry, processing invoices, scheduling meetings, and other administrative tasks.
  • Conducts customized research in Gazelle and other sources to support business attraction and retention activities
  • Assists with follow-up required to satisfy business requests generated.
  • Inputs information into the client record database (SalesForce) to track calls, leads, and prospects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • An associate degree or some college-level courses in Public Administration, General Business, Urban Planning, Marketing, or a closely related field. A combination of relevant training and experience that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience performing administrative and customer interface duties, with experience in economic development positions demonstrating increasing responsibility, is a plus.
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail are required.
  • Strong planning and analytical skills.
  • Ability to receive and understand directions, ask appropriate questions, and manage time to work effectively and independently.
  • Ability to communicate complex situations clearly and simply by listening actively and conveying difficult messages in a positive manner.
  • Ability to navigate challenging organizational, regulatory, and procedural hurdles to produce real results under tight timelines.

  • Strong working knowledge of and ability to navigate a Microsoft 365 environment
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Submittable, and Smartsheet.
  • Must be available to travel locally if necessary.
  • Must always demonstrate professionalism and a positive service attitude.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

DEGC is currently operating on a Hybrid schedule. Candidates should be aware that all employees must do in-person work at least twice a week. This in-person work includes but is not limited to reporting to the DEGC office, community engagement, and in-person meetings. DEGC reserves the right to terminate the Hybrid work schedule for any individual employee or all employees at any time, at its sole discretion.

Successful candidates will receive a competitive compensation package. The starting salary depends on the position's range and the selected candidate's experience and includes a full range of benefits.
